![]() ![]() Essentially, these words need to be “locked” into our memory so that we can identify them by sight instead of needing to rely on a phonetic decoding strategy.īy breaking our words down into these three categories, we are able to help students “decode” these high-frequency words effectively until they’ve been transitioned into memory. We use a “Lock Word Strategy” to teach high-frequency words (words that should become sight words). The great news here is that usually, the entire word doesn’t need to be memorized. Notice I mentioned PART of the word needs to be memorized. These words that are not fully decodable are sometimes known as “heart words” or “red words” because at least part of the word needs to be memorized in order to sound it out effectively. Words like “was” and “of” have at least one letter that doesn’t make a predicted sound pattern. However, some words are not fully decodable. ![]() In this case, students would need to be familiar with the R-controlled syllable type but as soon as they are familiar with that pattern the word becomes decodable. Or, if we consider the word “bird” bird is decodable if students know that “IR” says /r/. ![]() In the example provided above, the word “them” will be decodable as soon as a student learns that TH says /th/. So for example, if a student has learned that U says /u/ and S says /s/ the word “us” is decodable. There are 7 Steps to a SMARTER Research-Based Instruction Framework (we use the acronym SMARTER to help remember each of the key components!) 1 - Systematic Instruction Sight words (words that need to be learned by sight) can be taught systematicallyĪ decodable word is a word that can be sounded out with a student’s current level of knowledge. Instead, we can use a systematic framework and progression to help build a foundation for future learning while also giving students the knowledge they need to be successful at their current level. Now that said, we don’t need to have students memorize these words. Because they come up so often, it can be helpful to teach students these patterns a little earlier in their instructional journey. This is why sight words are also known as high-frequency words. However, there are many words that students need to know before they get to that level of progression because they come up so frequently. We talked more about this progression over here! When students are learning to read, they should be working through a progression of concepts as they’re learning to “sound out” words. ![]() The tricky thing is that students need to be taught a systematic set of rules and patterns to decode words effectively. Sight words are important because students need to have a certain level of automaticity in order to comprehend what they are reading. Basically, they are words we can read automatically without thinking about them. Sight words are words that need to be recognized by “sight” or words that we need to automatically recognize without sounding the word out. So we are jumping in to explain what these words actually are, and what the research says about how we should be teaching them!įirst things first - What are sight words? In reading intervention we hear terms like sight words, high-frequency words, phonetically irregular words, red words, heart words, and so many other variations used every day. ![]() ![]() ![]() And they have a one-time-forever payment for the license.ĭownside to H.A. is not FLOSS, but they are exceptionally responsive to users, including an active forum and a whole procedure for involving users in development decisions. Overall, it is a superb program that offers a lot over the current Musescore. even does tab and imports GP files so it competes with Tux Guitar on that. has a very high quality plugin framework too. It also integrates audio recording, but minimally. It also has a really remarkable "virtual singer" add-on. in full includes tons of options, very easy access to MIDI details of the notes, every darn thing is editable. ![]() How it compares to Musescore? It is fair to say it is much more mature but also dated. I'm looking forward to getting it working on GNU/Linux. If you only need to replace the opening casement frames or individual panes of glass, leaving the frame in place, you will not need approval.I own and use H.A. You will need to apply for this if you want to replace all windows and some doors in domestic and commercial buildings, when the whole window frame needs to be replaced. Outside of conservation areas, we will consider replacement PVCu windows on the merits of their design, the look of the building and local area. You will only get approval to replace windows on the front of buildings in conservation areas with PVCu windows where they match the originals very closely. If the external appearance of the building will be affected to a large extent, you would need planning permission to alter or replace any windows. The main exception is that you would need planning permission to remove or alter a window facing a highway within the Avenues and Pearson Park conservation area, Boulevard conservation area and Coltman Street conservation area. When only one household lives in a building (so it is not shared by more than six people or split into flats), it is usually possible to alter or replace windows without applying for planning permission. You would normally not get consent to put PVCu windows into a listed building. Like for like repairs, done with exactly matching materials, design and form would normally not need consent. You will normally need to apply for listed building consent to alter or replace windows in a listed building. Large paned Victorian and Edwardian designs are often more convincing than Georgian small paned or 'arts and crafts' types. ![]() It is possible to get PVCu windows that follow traditional designs more closely, but these can be expensive. PVCu windows crudely reproduce some authentic features, although designs are improving all the time. Poor reproductions can affect the character, appearance and architectural harmony of a building and can even reduce the value of a property. Many traditional designs are still mass produced, so you may be able to buy them ready made.īe careful to avoid replacement windows whose makers claim that they match historic details when they obviously do not. It is possible to reproduce traditional windows - try builders, joiners or restorers for a tailored service. When there is no other alternative, replacement windows should match the originals in proportion, design and position. Old glass of historic interest can also be salvaged using an infra-red heating device to soften hard putty. If you have a sash window that is stuck or difficult to open or close, you might simply need to get heavy paint build-up removed or get a joiner to fit new cords, weights and pulleys. To improve draught proofing, insulation and ease of access for cleaning you could consider weather stripping, secondary glazing or fitting 'simplex' window ironmongery - this allows traditional sashes to swing inwards. If you have a window frame or sill that is partly rotten, a joiner might be able to splice in new timber or repair the damage using a filler. In most cases there are cost-effective alternatives to replacing them. The view is often that traditional windows can be expensive to maintain, difficult to repair or impossible to improve. ![]() ![]() Always talk to your GP about your symptoms.įor those experiencing depression, the future may feel hopeless. What ensues is easily one of the best missions in the game that sees your soldiers verse wave after wave of aliens until you can knock out their signal beacon and depending on the size of your recruited squad, can see you controlling upwards of 13 plus soldiers within the mission. You Vs The UFO: As you go about your way around the map, sporadically, a red UFO begins to hunt you down until it finally takes down your ship. The game play also offers a mix of above map viewing and 3rd person animation as the camera pans right into your soldiers when making an action that showcases off their look, style and props. Of the two, I found much more freedom to lay out my team when the round clock wasn’t ticking down leading to many many fatal errors. Some missions have you trying to extract a VIP within 8 moves while others have no such limitations allowing you to spend more time setting up excellent ambushes and ensuring your team make it out alive. Play Style and Speed: Offering a mix of standard objective turned based matches and limited move matches, the speed in which you play is surprisingly lightning fast though you do have a say in just how stretched out a mission can go. While you have little control over their eventual skill set (rangers to sharpshooters to grenadiers) you genuinely get feels when your soldier is injured or killed in a mission. The characters you create via the character pool are then randomly fed to you from the onset and then, depending how you assign them, will pop up either on your recruitment list or as VIP’s that need rescuing.Ĭharacter Familiarity: As it goes, by creating your team from scratch, you get a feel for your soldiers and become attached and build an intimacy with them as you send them out on missions and level them up. Hair options are plentiful with everything from wavy bobs to buns, shaved sides and fro’s and there’s even more included with the extra DLC packs though those looking to don their character with hair longer than shoulder length (aside from the ‘dirty ponytail’) will come up empty handed. The only negatives I found within this section would be the mass of ‘less than attractive’ faces and the fact the armor you build later on into the game all but dispose any clothing you clad your soldier out with at the start of the game. The inclusions of everything from hair style and color, race, skin color, outfit and armor options, upper and lower face props, full name and nickname, tattoos and face paint, nationality, face type and accent (there’s even two male and two female Australian accents) make this one of the best in-game character creations seen to date (I’d love to see this type of customization within a first person shooter multiplayer type game!).
